Today is the birthday of David "Ziggy" Marley, born in
Kingston, Jamaica in 1968. Son of reggae god Bob Marley, Ziggy has made a name
for himself with his brothers and sisters, who perform as the Melody Makers.
Raised in their father's studio, Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers put out
their first reggae album in 1985, four years after their father's death from
cancer. Play The Game Right earned the group early respect, but it
wasn't until 1989's Conscious Party, featuring Keith Richards, that the
band fully achieved international success, with the single "Tumbling Down"
topping U.S. charts. Faithful followers in their fathers' footsteps, Ziggy
Marley and the Melody Makers favor a smooth, upbeat sound, featuring a
positive, life-affirming message.
