Producer Brad Wood Never Sleeps
Chicago Uberprodcuer, Brad Wood, seems to be popping up everywhere except at
his ever-popular Idful Studios these days. Wood, the producer behind both the
Liz Phair and Veruca Salt debuts, as well as Ben Lee's excellent solo debut, is
currently holed up in an L. A. studio working on That Dog's next record. It's
been that kind of year for the lanky mixmaster. In March, Wood traveled to
Dublin to record the debut by Placebo, a band whose sound he could only
describe as "a little bit of everything. Truly original." While mixing the
record in April, Wood found time to sit in on saxophone with his Chicago pals
Tortoise at the London club LA2. Then, it was back to Chicago for a marathon
session with local band Number One Cup, during which the band laid down all
their drum and bass tracks in two days, just in time for Wood to jet to L. A.
Wood told us that his schedule with That Dog is much more manageable. "They
have a pretty reasonable budget, so I get to act like a normal person and only
work 14 hour days instead of 16. Now I only have to work from 11 A.M. to 1 A.
M. six days a week, instead of 10 'till 2 every day."
