Deep Purple Flame On

Good enough for Patti.

With Patti Smith performing the old Deep Purple classic,

"Smoke On The Water," the time is certainly right for the group to do

something. Now we hear that they will play the Montreux Jazz Fest in

Switzerland on July 9. The Montreux Jazz Festival? Deep Purple? Oh well.

Anyway, as the story goes, it was in 1971, shortly after a casino in Montreux

burned down during a Frank Zappa concert that Deep Purple, inspired by the

fire, wrote and recorded "Smoke On The Water" in Montreux. Their Jazz Fest

appearance will mark the 25th anniversary of the writing of the song (as well

as the fire). Next up, Three Dog Night to reform and perform at a concert

celebrating the 25th anniversary of the time singer Danny Hutton stubbed his

big toe.
