Say It's Your Birthday: Janis Joplin

Hmmm...we wonder if today's birthday will be Janis Joplin

or Dewey Bunnel of America? The only real Joplin news is that the reissue of

the original Big Brother and the Holding Company album scheduled by Sony Legacy

for February 27 has now been put on indefinite hold. The album was a quickie

recording done for Mainstream Records in August 1966, to finance a way home

when the San Francisco band was stranded in Chicago (though it wasn't released

until after the band had electrified the Monterey Pop Festival the following

summer). Reissue producer, Bob Irwin, has been quoted as saying the sound from

the original multi-track tapes "is astounding." We here at the ATN Birthday

Bureau have always been of the opinion that Janis was never as good as when she

was with Big Brother. To support our claim, we'll direct you to "I Need A Man

To Love," from Cheap Thrills and the definitive version of "Down On Me"

recorded live at the Grande Ballroom that can be found on Janis Joplin's

Greatest Hits. Turn them up Real Loud. Other birthdays today Phil Everly

(Everly Brothers), Robert Palmer, Dolly Parton, Shelly Fabares, Mickey Virtue

(UB40), and Whitfield Crane(Ugly Kid Joe), and the only birthday that

really matters today: Edgar Allan Poe.
