Pearl Jam is putting out a two song single as a Christmas release
titled Merkin Ball, and yes it is a take-off on Neil Young's
Mirror Ball album--even down to the cover art, according to
those who have seen it. You remember that Pearl Jam served as
the (unaccredited) back-up band both on the album and for Young's
European tour. Returning the favor, Neil Young plays guitar on the two
songs, but does not sing. Nor did he write any portion of either song.
The tunes were recorded during the same sessions that produced
Mirror Ball, and are not traditional Christmas songs, rather
they are just two tracks that Eddie Vedder sang on. For the initiated,
merkins are false hair for female genitalia. Go figure.
