Today is the birthday of Justine Frischmann, lead singer/guitarist for
Elastica, born this day 1969. Frischmann formed the British pop band Suede
with her former boyfriend Brett Anderson, but left because he would never
play her songs or let her sing. After taking time out to get her degree in
Architecture from the University of London, Frischmann returned to the music
scene to form Elastica with Justin Welch, a former drummer for Suede.
Frischmann found Elastica guitarist Donna Matthews through an ad in the
British music weekly Melody Maker, and bassist Annie Holland joined
the group through mutual friends. Elastica's debut single "Strutter"
performed well on the British charts, and the band filled in for Sinead
O'Connor at Lollapalooza this past summer, as well as playing Britain's
Reading festival. Currently living in London with her boyfriend Damon Albarn
of Blur, Frischmann is enjoying the U.S. success of Elastica's single,
"Vaseline," the inspiration for which she claims came to her while sitting in
the bathroom, staring at a pot of Vaseline.
