Pearl Jam Reluctantly Cancel San Diego Shows

Imagine Pearl Jam's manager's surprise when he read in the San

Diego Union Tribune that Pearl Jam's June 26 and 27 shows at San

Diego's Del Mar Fairgrounds had been canceled at the suggestion of the

sheriff's department. "It came as a complete surprise and it was

disturbing to find out by reading it in the San Diego Union

Tribune that the sheriff's department chose to release their

concerns to the media rather than bringing it directly to us. Now

we're two weeks out from two sold out shows for 26,000 fans," fumed

Kelly Curtis, the band's manager. A spokesperson for the band's label

echoed Curtis' sentiments, saying that "it has become an untenable

situation, because of the sheriff's department drumming up local

hysteria by voicing concerns to the local media last Friday until

everyone was discussing it and concocting the worse case scenarios. It

escalated to such a point that it would be impossible to stage a

concert anywhere in that city." Pearl Jam begin their tour on June

16 in Casper Wyoming at Casper Events Center.
