Cashing In With Johnny

The upcoming Johnny Cash album, his second for Rick Rubin's American

Records, just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser. The still-untitled record,

which again features production from Rubin, finds Cash backed by Tom Petty and

the Heartbreakers and is littered, as we previously reported, with odd covers,

including songs by Soundgarden ("Rusty Cage"), Beck ("Rowboat"), Neil Young

("Pocahontas"), and L.A. smoothies Spain ("Spiritual"). Some of the guests

stopping by to add their talents this time around are Flea, Marty Stuart, Carl

Perkins and June Carter Cash. Cash is scheduled to play a CMJ showcase in

September and an October 4 show at the Greek Theater in L.A., and, according to

an American source, "it should be a good show, since, you know, a lot of people

on the record live in L.A., like Flea, Tom Petty, and Spain...."
