Just a week before P.M. Dawn's Jesus Wept album is due for release,
and as their single, "Downtown Venus," is charging up Billboard's
charts after debuting at #53, the band was faced with some shattering news.
P.M. Dawn vocalist Jarett Cordes was arrested Tuesday, September 19 on
charges that he had sex with a 14-year-old relative. (Does this make Cordes
the Jerry Lee Lewis of hip-hop?) Steve Raymond, Burlington County, N.J.
prosecutor, told the press that the 24-year-old rapper had been charged with
"aggravated sexual assault and child abuse."
Island Records, the label that P.M. Dawn record for, issued a press release
today saying that they "had been made aware that Jarett Cordes has been
arrested on a complaint alleging that he had consensual sex with a minor who
is his cousin." The release also stated that "although there has been a
complaint no grand jury has returned an indictment." Island Records also
wanted to make it very clear that Prince Be, Cordes brother and
producer/songwriter/vocalist for P.M. Dawn, was in no way involved or
implicated in the incident which resulted in Jarrett's arrest.
Cordes was released on $10,000 bond, and if convicted could face a maximum
prison sentence of twenty years.
