Silverchair Poised To Win Australian Awards

Australian correspondent Alex Jackson reports: Teenage grunge sensations

Silverchair look set to clean up at the Ninth

Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards to be announced in

Sydney next month. In the final nominations announced last week, Silverchair

headed the field

with eight nominations, in the categories of Best Australian Album, Best

Australian Single, Best Australian Group, Best Australian Alternative

Release, Best Australian New Talent, Best Australian Debut Album, Best

Australian Debut Single and Australian Song of the Year. Silverchair's

powerful debut album, Frogstomp, continues to do big business in the

U.S.; the album is just about to entire the Billboard Top 10. The

trio's remarkable eight nominations was equaled by the innovative and

attention grabbing Sydney-based singer Max Sharam, who once busked and sang

in a rock opera while she traveled through Europe. Sharam was nominated

for her debut EP Coma and debut album A Million Year Girl.

Unlike Silverchair, noone in the U. S. has ever heard of Sharam :-)

You Am I also featured prominently with four nominations: Best Australian

Group, plus Best Australian Album, Best Australian Alternative Release and

Best Australian Cover Artwork, all for Hi-Fi Way, an album that has

yet to be released in the U. S. Last year's big winners The Cruel Sea were

nominated in the categories of

Best Australian Group, Best Australian Cover Artwork and Highest Selling

Album for their Three Legged Dog album. The ARIA Awards will be

presented at Darling Harbour in Sydney on October 2.
