Today is the birthday of Chris DeGarmo of Queensryche. During the early '80s,
Queensryche was a standard heavy metal band sounding like a cross between
Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. In the middle of the decade, the band shifted
to a more progressive sound, adding elements of '70s art rock, particularly
Pink Floyd, to their music. Queensryche came into their own on 1988's
Operation Mindcrime, a concept album about a media-dominated future.
With Empire two years later, the band crossed over into the mainstream
with the hit "Silent Lucidity." Although they haven't released any new
material since that album, they continue to be one of the more respected
heavy metal bands of the early '90s. It is also the birthday of Boy George,
Ron Argent (Zombies), and Jimmy Lea (Slade).
