Rock superstars R.E.M. continued their pre-release promotion of Up (Oct.
27) on the "Late Show With David Letterman" on Thursday, where they performed their
new single, "Daysleeper"; the band returns to the show for another performance Friday
(Oct. 23). Clad in a black suit with a printed shirt, singer Michael Stipe stood
jittery at the mic Thursday, shaking his hands up and down to the waltz-like rhythm of
"Daysleeper." Joining the band on drums was the in-demand Joey Waronker
(Beck, Elliott Smith), sitting in for original drummer Bill Berry,
who left R.E.M. last year.
