Paper Clarifies U2-Rushdie Story

Ireland's Sunday Independent newspaper published a clarification Sunday of its

Oct. 11 story that claimed threatened British author Salman Rushdie was a regular

houseguest of U2 singer Bono. Following recently reported claims by

U2 guitarist The Edge that Bono only housed Rushdie on occasion and for short

periods, the paper retracted its previous story. The retraction asserted that the statement

that the controversial author's visits were "frequent" was an "embellishment." Rushdie

has been under a death threat imposed by late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah

Khomeini since 1989, when Khomeini declared Rushdie's book "Satanic Verses" (1988)

blasphemous to Islam.
