R.E.M. Plan Three TV Performances

R.E.M. may have cancelled plans to tour in support of their forthcoming album, Up, but fans of the Athens, Ga.-based superstars will nevertheless be able to see the group perform live in October, or at least live on television. According to the band's manager, Bertis Downs, the band's three remaining members will barnstorm New York City this month, treating select audiences of fan-club members and radio-contest winners to three live performances, all of which also will be broadcast on national television. Downs said that the art-pop band will be filming a live performance Oct. 21 for an MTV special called "Uplink," which will be broadcast Oct. 28. On Oct. 22, the band will appear on the "Late Show with David Letterman," and they will film an episode of "VH1 Storytellers" on Oct. 23
