Spearhead Tix For Sound Hours

Fans attending the Spearhead concert at the Capitol Theatre in Olympia, Wash., on Aug. 1 can leave their wallets at home. No, the show by the San Francisco Bay Area-based conscious jazz/soul/rap band is not free. Instead, the price of admission must be paid with something called a "Sound Hour." Following the example of Ithaca, N.Y., where the local alternative currency is known as an Ithaca Hour, Olympia is attempting to establish a local economy in which Sound Hours are as valuable as real money. In addition to accepting the usual federal currency, local businessman and workers have consented to receiving at least a portion of payment in Sound Hours. The conversion rate is simple -- $10 is the equivalent of one hour of community service. The goal of the program is to strengthen the economy by keeping local workers employed. Concert-goers can purchase a Sound Hour for $10 before the show and use the currency as their admission ticket. The Hours collected at the concert will be distributed to local charities who will be able to hire locals to work for them.
