Cerebral punkers Bad Religion have announced the winner of their

self-financed "Bad Religion Research Fund" scholarship, which was awarded to

a University of Michigan biology graduate student studying forest renewal. Lena

Sharon Nicolai will receive $3,898.35 to fund her studies in forest health and

renewal, thanks to the first-ever scholarship awarded in the band's name. The

grad student, who won out over 200 other applicants, said in a prepared

statement that she appreciated "the band's genuine interest in education and

natural science research. It is good to be able to accept funds from a group

whose principles I respect." As an added perk, Nicolai has been placed on the

band's lifetime guest list.
