Another as-yet-unreleased song has made its way to the Net. A new Alanis Morissette track, "Uninvited," from

the forthcoming soundtrack City of Angels, was played last week on

L.A. radio station KROQ-FM; the cut turned up as a near-CD quality MP3 file

almost immediately ... Although they haven't yet named a permanent replacement for the drum position, Minneapolis rockers Soul Asylum will be playing with ex-Cruzados drummer Charlie Quintana sitting in at an L.A. date on March 13. The band's upcoming release, Candy from a Stranger (May 12), will feature ex-drummer Sterling Campbell ...

Reunited second-wave ska legends the Specials will release their first album of new material in more than 15 years, Guilty 'Til Proved Innocent, on March 24 ... Speaking of the Specials, they will join Sugar Ray and Novacaine at "EL Nino," a sports and music festival featuring in-line skating, snowboarding and BMX demos that will take place April 4 at the Sugar Bowl ski area in California ...

Last week, a Texas state Board of Education committee postponed any

recommendation on whether the board should divest the $52 billion in stock

it holds with Time-Warner, Walt Disney Company and Sony, according to Texas BOE spokesman Joey Lozano. Under a law passed last year, no state funds may be invested in record companies producing work that meets the state's definition of obscene after Sept. 1, 1998 ... Quasi, the Northwest punk-rock duo featuring guitarist Sam Coomes (ex-Heatmiser) and Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss will soon release their second album in just 12 months. "Terrapin Station" and "St. Stephen" ... British pop-rocker Nick

Lowe has just released a new album of jazzy and power-pop tunes

entitled Dig My Mood ...

Not to be confused with the metal-centric "Monsters of Rock" tour of a few

years ago, "Monsters of Folk" is a kinder, gentler package tour that will

hit theaters in April with a lineup featuring ex-Blasters leader

Dave Alvin, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Tom Russell and

Chris Smither. The mostly acoustic show will find the artists

playing their folk-, blues- and country-tinged tunes in an in-the-round

setting ... A number of heavy-metal and punk bands will join forces on

March 29 at New York's Tramps nightclub for a charity event benefiting the

Prabhupada Sankirtan Society, a food-for-the-homeless program. Among the

participants is organizer and ex-Cro-Mags leader John Joseph

(currently frontman of the band Both Worlds), Biohazard,

Burn, Civ, Earth Crisis, Sick Of It All,

Sub-Zero and Vision of Disorder ... Ben

Folds Five are working on a track for the soundtrack to the upcoming

summer blockbuster Godzilla. The band is also preparing for the

recording

of its next album, as well as (much further down the line) an instrumental

solo album by leader/pianist Ben Folds ...

Industrial-pop band Stabbing Westward will release the follow-up to

their breakthrough album, Wither Blister Burn + Peel, on April 7. The

album, Darkest Days, features the single "Save Yourself," as well as

"Torn Apart," "Everything I Touch," "How Can I Hold On," "Drugstore,"

"You Complete Me," "Haunting Me," "Sometimes It Hurts," "Drowning,"

"Desperate Now," "Goodbye," "When I'm Dead," "The Thing I Hate,"

"On Your Way Down" and "Waking Up Beside You" ... A collection of singles

by electronic act Q-Burns Abstract Message, entitled Oeuvre,

will be released on May 5. The collection will feature the tracks "141

Revenge Street," "Flava Lamp," "Enter/Other," the previously-unreleased

track "Bugeyed Sunglasses," "Toast+X," "Pools in Eyes," "Puff the Magic"

and "Touchin' On Something" ...

Polara's Ed Ackerson is busy in his home studio producing the

upcoming album from John Strohm (formerly of Antenna,

Blake Babies and the Lemonheads). The album is slated for a

summer release on Flat Earth Records. "Basically the record is just me,

John and (Polara drummer) Pete Anderson," said

recently produced several tracks by the Jayhawks for the
