Columbia Records, through its billyjoel.com website, has confirmed that

Billy Joel has been forced to cancel his European tour with Elton

John due to persistent laryngitis and asthmatic bronchitis. The site quotes

Dr. Stephen Rothstein of New York University Medical Center as saying that

he advised Joel to refrain from singing. Joel's scheduled June 20 HBO

special with Elton John is also likely canceled. The Elton John and

Billy Joel "Face To Face" tour began May 29 in Dublin, Ireland, and was

set to continue through June 30 in Zurich, Switzerland. Scheduling

conflicts and unavailability of venues means that the shows will not be

rescheduled. Joel expects to begin his U.S. tour in Connecticut as scheduled

on Sept. 9. Joel and John previously toured together in the U.S. in 1994 and

1995 and earlier this year in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
