Archie Gets The Band Back Together In This Exclusive Look At 'The Archies'

Alex Segura and Matthew Rosenberg talk about bringing ‘The Archies’ to New Riverdale

The Archies are back! Just in time for The CW's Riverdale — a subversive reinvention of the characters and places immortalized in Archie — Archie Comics is adding four new one-shot comics to its current New Riverdale line, including one that documents the formation of The Archies.

It's been a minute since Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, and Jughead Jones made a splash in the music scene, but The Archies will follow Archie's quest to make his songwriting dreams a reality. Written by Alex Segura and Matthew Rosenberg (Archie Meets Ramones), with art by Joe Eisma, The Archies will test the limits of Archie's rock and roll dream but also his relationships with his closest friends.

"We're building off a lot of the foundation laid down by Archie writer Mark Waid, so having Joe Eisma take on the art chores for this book is a nice bit of synergy, and Joe's a hell of an artist who gets the challenges that come with not only drawing teens, but music," Segura told MTV News. "It's gonna be a fun, heartfelt, and different kind of adventure for Archie and his friends."

For Eisma, who's currently working with Waid on Archie, the chance to explore Archie Comics' colorful pop history in The Archies was a "dream come true." Oh, and did we mention that the 48-page one-shot features a Jaime Hernandez cover? Because it sure is swell, as our Archiekins would say.

"Archie has been doing some of the best comics on shelves in recent years," Rosenberg said. "They are fresh and vital but still have that classic Archie feel. I think what Alex, Joe, and I are doing plays into that. It's going to approach a classic piece of Archie lore in a new way."

Two stellar variant covers from artists David Mack and Audrey Mok (seen below) will also be available when the book hits shelves March 15, 2017.
