Remember all the iconic weirdos from Tim Burton's Batman films? And Christian Bale's super husky Batman voice? And pretty much every directorial choice Christopher Nolan made from Batman Begins to Bane's stadium-shaking antics in The Dark Knight Rises?
So does Ben Affleck. And he is a very, very big fan of, uh, all of that.
In an interview with Variety following a screening of his next Boston crime caper, Live By Night, Affleck discussed his next directorial pursuit, The Batman. He's very excited to join the ranks of Burton, Nolan, and the various actors and directors who've all taken on the formidable task of bringing Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter ego to life, and he looks up to their respective Batmans (Batmen?) in a big way.
“I respect all of those movies,” he told Variety. “Christopher Nolan did an incredible job, Christian Bale did an incredible job, Tim Burton did an incredible job. At a certain point you have to look forward and try to believe in your own vision for it and not be looking over your shoulder the whole time. I go into that movie with a tremendous amount of respect for the people who came before me.” (Considering that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still hanging out in the rearview, looking forward is definitely not the worst idea.)
Affleck also added that they're making progress: Details for The Batman's timeline are scant, but he did mention that they're on schedule (even if we have no idea when to expect this Affleck directing/starring vehicle).
"We’re on the right track with that and everything is coming together," he shared. "We’re still finishing up a script. I’m very excited."
In the meantime, Live By Night hits select theaters on December 25.
