Then And Now: Here Are All The Ways MTV's Scream Paid Homage To The Wes Craven Film Franchise

Looks like there was a reason we often got that feeling of déjà vu

As the old saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Just last summer, MTV rebooted Wes Craven's epic Scream franchise with a different setting, a fresh cast of characters and even a brand-new mask -- but, truth is, the small-screen version still had a slew of clever similarities to its big-screen brother.

And now is the perfect time to celebrate them: It was 20 years ago today that the very first Scream slashed its way on to the big screen. Starring Neve Campbell as the ultimate final girl Sidney Prescott, the flick followed the deadly Ghostface as he slaughtered teens in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California. Three sequels -- and a lot more blood -- followed.

MTV's version, meanwhile, features high school student Emma Duval who, so far, has been at the center of two murder sprees in her hometown of Lakewood (along with fan favorite Brooke, brainiac Noah and the eyebrow-raising Audrey). Indeed, Em has a lot in common with good ol' Sidney: In August of this year, the show's Season 2 killer was revealed to be Emma's very own boyfriend Kieran, meaning she'd been hoodwinked just like Sid (who learned in the first Scream that her bae Billy Loomis was behind the mask).

So how else did the TV series give a winking nod to the films? Read on to relive all the scenes that paid homage to the now-legendary horror film franchise and, more importantly, to the late, great Wes Craven -- aka the man behind the mystery, the suspense, and all that glorious screaming:
