Ariana Grande Says That Hairspray Live! Is The Musical We ‘Cosmically’ Need

‘It’s a message that we need to get out there, you know?’

Hairspray Live! will finally bring Tracy Turnblad's twisting and shouting Baltimore of the 1960s to life on your television screen Wednesday night (December 7) — and not a moment too soon, according to one of its stars.

Ariana Grande, who will don her pigtails and play the part of Penny Pingleton tonight, thinks that the musical — which stresses the importance of self-acceptance and love in the face of adversity — couldn't be coming to TV at a better time.

In an interview, Grande and her co-star, Kristin Chenoweth, opened up about the positivity that shines through Hairspray and why one song in particular — Grande's duet with co-star Jennifer Hudson, “Come So Far (Got So Far to Go)” — will strike a poignant nerve.

“The message in the song is exactly what we need right now,” Grande told E! News. “Because the hook says, ‘We've come so far, but we've got so far to go,’ which is exactly where we're at right now. It's exactly why we're supposed to be doing this show right now, cosmically. The world needs to hear it in a fun, musical way. It's a message that we need to get out there, you know?”

We do. 💖

Hairspray Live! airs on NBC on December 7 at 8 p.m. E.T.
