You might want to think twice before signing up for that cool new social media account — at least, that's what the first trailer for The Circle would like you to think.
Based on Dave Eggers's bestseller of the same name, the sci-fi thriller starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks follows a young woman who goes to work for a large tech company that compiles personal information for the web. Through a series of successful product launches — including SeeChange, or portable cameras that provide real-time video to your followers — the line between transparency and privacy becomes blurred, exposing the perils of living in a surveillance society.
"There needs to be accountability," Hanks's Steve Jobs–inspired tech mogul asserts in the first trailer. "Knowing is good, but knowing everything is better." Dun dun dunnnn.
Movies have already ruined everything from landlines (Scream) to VHS tapes (The Ring) to gaming consoles (Stay Alive) to Skype (Unfriended), so why not add another technology we love to the list? But the joke's on writer-director James Ponsoldt: Our smart phones are already tracking us!!!
The Circle arrives in theaters April 28, 2017.
