Lady Gaga Opens Up About Her PTSD Struggle

‘I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day’

Lady Gaga visited the Ali Forney Center for homeless LGBTQ youth at the end of November to share gifts, meditation, and music. The Today segment on her visit aired Monday (December 5), and it turns out she also shared a secret she's never told before.

“I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day,” Gaga told the center while leading a meditation session. Later, she told an interviewer exactly what that mental illness was.

“I told the kids today that I suffer from a mental illness. I suffer from PTSD,” she said. “I've never told anyone that before, so here we are.”

Gaga came out as a rape survivor two years ago. PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a common ailment among survivors of sexual assault and can include symptoms like insomnia, nightmares, and flashbacks to the traumatic event.

But Gaga has managed to find the silver lining in her struggle with the illness: compassion. “My own trauma in my life has helped me to understand the trauma of others,” she said.
