Today, protesters against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) are celebrating a major victory. On Sunday (December 4), the Army Corps of Engineers announced — after months of protests from thousands of people camped out at the Standing Rock reservation in North and South Dakota — that it would look for alternative routes for the oil pipeline, which means the construction could be delayed for months or even years.
The #NoDAPL movement grew even bigger this year after celebrities started speaking out about it on social media. Actress Shailene Woodley opposed the DAPL and even broadcast her arrest at the protest site to millions of viewers via Facebook Live in October. When this weekend's news broke, she had a witty comment ready to go. And she wasn't the only one.
Other stars also shared their joy, calling the protestors “American heroes” for their efforts.
