Ryan Gosling Wants You To Know He’s Never Actually Said ‘Hey Girl’

He and Emma Stone really can’t make sense of his internet fame

Ryan Gosling is perhaps the internet’s OG boyfriend, but it turns out this is a pretty one-sided relationship. Sorry, girl.

For years, the genetically gifted actor’s mug has shown up alongside the expression “Hey, girl” for a meme usually referred to as “Feminist Ryan Gosling.” The memes basically show Gosling being super nice and comforting to women, which seems like a pretty harmless thing. But as he points out to Variety in a new interview, “I’ve never said that.”

His La La Land co-star Emma Stone is equally baffled by his internet fame, telling him, “I don’t even understand. I mean, you’re great, but why have you become this — why?”

To answer her question, Gosling compares his meme-heavy relationship with the internet to getting hit in the face with a pigeon. Yes, really.

“Do you remember when Fabio got hit in the face with a pigeon on the roller coaster and it broke his nose?” he asks, as crickets probably chirped in the distance. “Sometimes I feel like I’m the pigeon and the internet is Fabio’s face. Actually, I don’t know if I’m the pigeon or I’m Fabio’s face. Depends on the day, I guess.”

Assuming you’re not in the minority of people who remember the aforementioned Fabio/pigeon incident, allow the internet to remind you with the video below. You know, the internet which Gosling feels so terribly conflicted about. Sigh.
