Chance The Rapper Collaborator Donnie Trumpet Just Retired His ‘Hurtful’ Stage Name

‘What began as a joke, a silly play on words, is not funny anymore’

Donnie Trumpet, one of Chance the Rapper's main collaborators, is retiring his stage name.

The driving force behind the 2015 album Surf has decided to go by his given name, Nico Segal, in light of this week's election results and what they mean to the country going forward.

In a note shared on Twitter, Segal said that he began to feel differently about his stage name during Chance's Magnificent Coloring World Tour. "Something heavy was looming over me — Donald Trump — and the connection people are drawing between his name and mine," he wrote.

"What began as a joke, a silly play on words, is not funny anymore," Segal continued. "I don't want to be connected to Trump's hateful tone or his hurtful message. I don't want to be misrepresented or misunderstood. Trump's beliefs are not mine."

Instead, he's asking fans to call him by the name his family uses: Nico. But that doesn't mean he's about to put down his trumpet anytime soon.
