If you like ambitious sci-fi, then you’re probably going to like Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. If you like ambitious sci-fi starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, and a slew of spaceships, spacesuits, space-weapons, space-portals, and aliens of all shapes and sizes, then you’re going to L-O-V-E Valerian.
The first trailer for Besson’s space adventure just dropped, and what it lacks in plot, it makes up for in visual spectacle — and space. There’s a whole lot of space happening here.
Based on the French comic-book series Valerian and Laureline — created by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres — the film stars DeHaan and Delevingne as a pair of special space-traveling government operatives tasked with maintaining order throughout the universe. Their latest mission finds them in the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, a space metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all over the universe — including Rihanna, who appears to be playing some kind of sultry shapeshifter.
Fans can get a sense for their dynamic in the teaser trailer, as DeHaan’s Valerian routinely attempts to romantically court Delevingne’s Laureline. “We get on just great. You flirt. I smile,” Laureline tells Valerian, just before the teaser cuts to a scene in which she punches him across the face. Sounds like a great partnership to us!
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hits theaters on July 21, 2017.
