Shawn Mendes Played ‘Mercy’ Inside A Glass Case Of Emotion At The 2016 MTV EMA

The Canadian singer proved his rock chops at this year’s awards ceremony

Shawn Mendes performed what might just be the definitive version of “Mercy” at the 2016 MTV EMA on Sunday night (November 6).

Playing the grand piano inside a translucent prism, the singer delivered raw, heartfelt vocals while digital rain dripped down the sides of his screened-in enclosure. Then the screens lifted and Shawn got to come out of his cage just in time for a full live band to take over the instrumentation.

He’s known as a pop vocalist, but Shawn proved his rock chops onstage at the Netherlands’ Ahoy Rotterdam, where the show took place. He roughed up his delivery just enough to lend some danger to what might be one of his most exciting live performances to date.

Shawn also took home the EMA for Best Male, beating out his rival-turned-Twitter-buddy Justin Bieber, and repped his homeland of Canada with a purple globe for Worldwide Act.
