It’s Official: 'Fantastic Beasts' Will Feature Dumbledore — And Grindelwald

Rowling also casually dropped that ‘Fantastic Beasts’ will be five — yes, five! — movies

So, you thought Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was going to be a trilogy, huh? Well, so did we — until J.K. Rowling revealed that the trilogy was simply a placeholder for the adventures of Newt Scamander. Rowling, the bestselling author of the Harry Potter series and writer of the upcoming Fantastic Beasts film, announced today (October 13) that the franchise will in fact be five movies.

“We were doing some script sessions the other day,” Rowling said during a worldwide Facebook Live event in promotion of Fantastic Beasts. “We always knew it was going to be more than one movie. We knew that from the start. We set a trilogy as a placeholder. I’ve now done the plotting properly, and we’re pretty sure it’s going to be five movies.”

During the fan event, director David Yates also confirmed our suspicions that both Grindelwald and Dumbledore will be featured in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, with dark wizard Grindelwald playing a significant role in the films to come. It appears that the film franchise will explore the events leading to Grindelwald’s wizarding war. Interestingly enough, Yates also revealed that the second film — the script of which Rowling has completed — will take place outside of New York City in a different capital city. It’s unclear if that means Fantastic Beasts will stay in North America or make the move to Europe, where Grindelwald will be waging war against the Muggles.

Fantastic Beasts also dropped this extended featurette, and if you look closely, you might just see the Sign of the Deathly Hallows — and the big bad Grindelwald himself.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters on November 18, 2016.
