24 Stars Who Slay Double Space Buns Like Zenon Does

Lunarious hair for every ‘Supernova Girl’

In 1999, Disney Channel introduced Earth to Zenon Kar, a 13-year-old casually living out her teens aboard a space station. Over the course of three original movies, she repeatedly saved the planet from aliens and other nefarious forces.

The film's wardrobe — 90 percent shiny spandex — was literally out of this world, and so were the hairstyles. From hair ties that doubled as Slinkys to frosted tips galore, the Zenon trilogy gave its characters truly unforgettable 'dos. Take Zenon's double buns, also called space buns, for example.

Celebs before and after Zenon's time have added their own spins to the look as well. Here are some of our favorites:

After Miley Cyrus memorably stole the show at the 2013 VMAs, a Tumblr meme surfaced comparing her hair to Zenon's. She did grow up on Disney Channel, after all.

Before Miley hit the VMAs, No Doubt's ocean-haired leading woman walked the carpet in 1998.

  3. Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia

The term “space buns” likely comes from Princess Leia of Star Wars, known for sporting signature large buns covering each ear. (Creator George Lucas said they were influenced by “turn-of-the-century Mexico.”) Actress Carrie Fisher first played the character in A New Hope, released back in 1977.

  4. Björk

Björk adopted space buns as her go-to in the late '80s. She's pictured above performing with her band, The Sugarcubes, in 1992 before their breakup and her subsequent solo career.

  5. Scary Spice

Mel B, Scary Spice from the one, the only Spice Girls, took her tresses to new heights. She's rocked bantu knots — a traditional hairstyle with roots in South Africa, worn by everyone from Rihanna to FKA Twigs — for photo shoots in the past, possibly inspiring this look.

  7. Khloé Kardashian

Meanwhile, Khloé Kardashian calls them “hello kitty, devil, [or] harajuku” buns, so there's that. She wore them for her first-ever Snapchat last April.

Ariel from The Little Mermaid's got nothing on RiRi's red hair.

  9. Hilary Duff as Lizzie McGuire

Between the butterfly clips, Kate Sanders's green hair prank, and crimped bangs, Lizzie McGuire is a time capsule for mid-2000s hair trends.

  10. Kendall Jenner

This was Kendall's fresh #OOTD at Coachella.

  11. Katy Perry

Not to be outdone, Katy donned pink buns to Coachella.

  12. Ariana Grande

In a rare turn of events, Ari ditched her luscious ponytail to try something different.

  13. Zendaya

    You mean Zend-SLAY-a?

  14. Demi Lovato

Nobody's hair is that perfect at the gym. Just sayin'.

  15. Britney Spears

When shampoo commercials talk about their products making your hair “bouncy,” this is what they're talking about.

  16. Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony

The important question here is, is that Ellen DeGeneres's parking spot in the background? Camila, please confirm.

  17. Rita Ora

Rita Ora took her buns to the stage during a 2013 performance in Tokyo, Japan.

  18. Cara Delevingne

This is how everyone looks when they exit a building, correct?

  19. Ciara

Ciara showed off her buns, too.

  20. Tinashe

See more stunning pics from Tinashe's Eighty-Nine cover story here.

  21. Halsey

In early 2015, Halsey had long, bright blue hair fit for a mermaid. Why'd she chop it off? “I needed to be able to prove that I could still love myself if I did it,” she explained.

  22. Bridgit Mendler
    Myriam Santos

The Disney Channel alumna recently took up buns in the teaser images for her new song, “Atlantis.”

  23. Vanessa Hudgens

Sadly boyfriend Austin Butler's hair is too short to pull this off himself.

  24. Harry Styles

The bad news: These pics are photoshopped. The good news: His hair was once long enough for a man bun, so this hairstyle could totally be a reality someday! If anyone knows how to handle his buns, it's Harry.
