One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" is the track that kicked off their explosive career, so it takes a lot of guts to tackle the single that launched Harry, Zayn, Niall, Liam, and Louis from The X Factor finale to international superstardom.

That's probably why The 1975 were all, "You know what this needs? A whole entire ORCHESTRA!" when they decided to try their hands at the tune for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge Month 2016 on September 30.

With the BBC Philharmonic, The 1975 slow the bouncing pop track way, waaaaay down and give it the serenade treatment, with Matt Healy serving up the polar opposite of 1D's joyful vibe with pleading sincerity. They also covered Justin Bieber's "Sorry" for the set, but that was a far more lighthearted affair, thanks to the chorus in the background and some cheery, brassy horn blasts.

Prepping for the gig was such a moving experience for Healy that he couldn't help but cry at points, an emotional quality that's absolutely present in the clip from the performance above.

"The orchestra really makes the up moments more celebratory and the down moments more introspective and melancholy," he told Radio 1. We absolutely agree, and we wouldn't be mad in the slightest if a smaller-scale cover worked its way into their fall tour set.
