Lil Wayne Is Leaving Cash Money On A ‘Grateful’ Note

And he’s hinting at a potentially huge collaboration with Drake in the process

After hinting that his retirement and a permanent separation from Cash Money were imminent, Lil Wayne dropped a new track that states in plain terms that, yeah, he’s definitely ready to move on — and his music may already have a new home at another label.

With “Grateful,” which is streaming exclusively on Tidal, Lil Wayne clarifies exactly what he means by “feeling defeated” and why it’s time for a change.

If the first words we hear from him don’t drive the point home (“New chapter, move on, look back for what?”), the rest of his bars do: “They can’t put no more Weezy Baby out / That’s that Cash Money vasectomy / I still got love for my enemy / ’Cause I know its tough to be interesting / I know it’s tough to be anything but be grateful.”

Does this mean a future with Drake’s October's Very Own is in Weezy’s cards? Drake hinted at an upcoming collaboration on his Instagram last week, posting a shot of Lil Wayne sporting the OVO insignia. In the “Grateful” hook, Lil Wayne directly throws to one of Drake’s most quoted lines from “Know Yourself,” saying that he’s “TTG, trained to go, time to get it / For my woes, for my city, for my hoes, for my critics.”

Drake ran through his city with his woes on “Know Yourself”; if Lil Wayne is ready to run with his, is this a hint that he’s running in Drake’s direction? Only time will tell, but if “Grateful” is any indication, we won’t have to wait long to find out what Lil Wayne is up to next.
