Lil Wayne shook the hip-hop world last weekend when he announced he’s feeling “mentally defeated” and plans to retire from rap. Drake, Young Thug, Missy Elliot, and Chance the Rapper were among his colleagues who weighed in and sent Weezy their support, and now Kendrick Lamar has added his voice to the mix.
Early this morning (September 9), K. Dot shared a video filmed during a recent studio session, in which he passionately urges Wayne not to hang up the mic. The black-and-white clip kicks off with Kendrick rapping along to throwback Wayne tracks like “Hot Boy” and “Gangsta Shit” (and showing off his best nasally Tunechi impression) before getting serious.
“Public service announcement,” Kendrick says to the camera. “We going all the way back, when he was motherfuckin’ 16, 15 years old on some Hot Boy shit. Day one ... Talking ’bout retiring and shit. Fuck that! Retire, quitting rap, whatever you wanna call it ... No! No! No! No!”
Yep, I’d say Kendrick’s message comes through loud and clear. Hear that, Wayne?
