It’s all happening, Spice Girls fans. In July, three Spices — Scary (Mel B), Baby (Emma Bunton), and Ginger (Geri Halliwell) — teamed up for a teaser video honoring the 20th anniversary of their first record, Spice. Then Thursday night (September 9), Mel B confirmed the fantastic news to James Corden: an official reunion is coming!
“We are going to do something, us three. We’re going to perform and celebrate together,” she said, adding that shows would likely start in London before “working [their] way around.” They’ve dubbed the project GEM after their three names: Geri, Emma, and Mel B.
“The other two bitches didn’t want to do it,” Mel B joked. “Let me correct that. My other two fellow lovely ladies — you know, Victoria’s busy with her great fashion line. Mel C’s doing her own album and so they gracefully said, ‘You three go ahead and do it.’ We’re girl power, we support each other.”
Sporty actually explained her decision two weeks ago in an essay for Love Magazine.
“I will be a Spice Girl until I die,” Mel C wrote. “But is it a new rule that bands have to reform? Why can’t we just be remembered for our incredible achievements in the nineties? ... Didn’t we reach a peak with the Olympics? There’s a lot to be said for bowing out on a high note.”
At least three Spices are better than none.
