Ben Affleck Is Torn Between Good And Evil In His New Boston Crime Flick

The trailer for ‘Live By Night’ is here, and it’s intense

Ben Affleck’s Boston is no longer simply the setting for bank heists and bar mischief: His next directorial undertaking is a dark crime drama set in his hometown, and it looks like it could make Argo and The Town seem lighthearted by comparison.

The trailer for Live By Night is here, and it features Affleck as a good guy gone gangster (who’s just as allergic to the letter R as he is in his other Suffolk County–based flicks) in Boston before and after the Great Depression.

Zoe Saldaña, Sienna Miller, and Elle Fanning all play prominent parts in the film, which has Affleck’s character bouncing between the explosive streets of the Massachusetts capital and the tropical waters of Florida. There’s a lot to take in on this first look, but the basic gist of it is that Affleck wants nothing to do with his criminal career: “I don’t wanna be a gangster; I stopped kissing rings a long time ago” is one of the few lines we get from him in the clip, and the other snippets of dialogue we do get are husky, somber, and sinister.

“What you put out in this world will always come back to you” is the sentiment that echoes, and you can tell that Affleck’s character will certainly reap what he sows in Live By Night.

The movie is based on a 2012 novel by Dennis Lehane, the author behind the books that inspired Gone, Baby, Gone, Affleck’s directorial debut; Mystic River; and Shutter Island. Live By Night is scheduled to open in theaters January 13, 2017.
