Vince Staples Drops New EP 'Prima Donna': Listen
Vince Staples is giving fans plenty to “smile” about today. The Long Beach rapper’s new EP, Prima Donna, doesn’t officially release until tomorrow, but he generously premiered the whole thing a day early on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show.
The six-track EP is Staples’s first project since his debut album, Summertime ’06, dropped last June. Along with production from James Blake, the EP also features guest contributions from A$AP Rocky and Kilo Kish.
"I worked hard on it,” Staples told Lowe about Prima Donna. “On just trying to have stories to tell people. Honesty is easy. The stories — that’s the hard part.”
Among the EP’s standout tracks is “Smile”, which Lowe picked as his “World Record” selection. An ambitious, psychedelic-sounding cut, “Smile” features a fuzzy guitar hook and Staples’s playful wordplay as he shows off his vulnerable side: “How you doing everybody hope you had a nice day / Sometimes I feel all alone, sometimes I can’t get away / I feel my life is in danger every night when I lay / So could you do me a favor, smile for me?”
Prima Donna is available now on iTunes and is also available to stream via Apple Music.
