Tegan And Sara’s Surreal New Video Will Remind You There’s Beauty In Anxiety

The duo teamed up with ‘BoJack Horseman’'s visual mastermind for a delightfully bizarre new vid

After ceding the spotlight to a group of LGBTQ impersonators in their recent “Faint of Heart” video, Tegan and Sara have again elected not to appear in their newest clip. Instead, they’ve handed the reigns to illustrator Lisa Hanawalt, the visual mastermind behind Netflix’s BoJack Horseman, who’s given life to yet another anthropomorphic horse.

The synthpop duo’s “Hang On to the Night” video stars a giant purple horse who pulls literal diamonds from its body and puts them in the sky. As the horse ventures across a surreal landscape, it rallies its fellow night creatures, which include cats riding on horses and twerking plants.

Tegan and Sara told Nylon, who premiered the video, that the delightfully bizarre clip captures the underlying optimism of dealing with anxiety. “Humans are incredibly resilient, and the refrain reminds me of what we are capable of and what we can recover from,” Sara Quinn said, referencing the song’s uplifting words: “If you can manage to hold on, you can face another day.”

“Hang On to the Night” is the sixth track from Tegan and Sara’s Love You To Death to get a visual treatment. The duo previously said they plan to release a video for every song on the album, meaning there are still four more to look forward to.
