Will Smith Is Very Into Donald Trump Embarrassing Himself

‘We get to know who people are, and now we get to cleanse it out of our country’

Will Smith was a multitasking pro during a recent Suicide Squad press conference in Dubai. He not only worked in a Wild Wild West–related joke at his own expense, but proceeded to give Americans — namely, those who are attempting to distance themselves from the remarks made by one particular presidential candidate — a good name abroad.

In addition to answering questions about Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and working on a range of lowbrow and Oscar-nominated movies ("Some of them will be critically acclaimed; some of them will make money; some of them will be Wild Wild West"), Smith took on topics of a more political ilk: Islamophobia and Donald Trump.

Smith used himself as an example of someone who wants nothing to do with the hateful rhetoric that Trump has been perpetuating on the campaign trail. "In terms of Islamophobia, for me, that's why it's important to show up," he says. "I'm in Dubai, I'm tweeting, I'm showing pictures: 'Hey! It doesn't look like they hate me, does it?'"

Smith went on to reference Trump's penchant for shocking commentary, and his logic is slightly surprising given the Zen approach he seems to have for dealing with a man he's previously criticized for the "crazy stuff" he says. Smith's attitude? Let the man talk. In doing so, Trump's revealing his true colors, which can only be a benefit for those interested in moving forward without him come November.

"As painful as it is to hear Donald Trump talk and as embarrassing as it is as an American to hear him talk, I think it's good," he said. "We get to hear it. We get to know who people are, and now we get to cleanse it out of our country."
