While her Fierce Five teammates Gaby Douglas and Aly Raisman flipped their way to Rio, former Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney took her talents from the vault to the studio. She’s now working toward a music career, citing Taylor Swift and Drake as her biggest inspirations.
“I like to say my genre is vulnerable pop because it’s all melody and lyrically driven and heart driven,” the 20-year-old recently told Us. Her “favorite thing to sing about is love.”
So it makes sense that today, she’s “very much single” and exploring what dating is like. As an elite athlete, she didn’t have time for boys.
“We weren’t allowed to have a boyfriend,” she revealed. “You’re so dedicated and committed. I mean, I was in the gym for like eight hours a day and then outside of that I’d be doing school or writing songs in my free time, so there really wasn’t time for boys at all.”
Maroney’s debut single, “Ghost,” drops September 8, so you definitely have something to look forward to after the Olympics wrap.
