Ezra Miller Explains How Negative 'Suicide Squad' Reviews ‘Motivate’ The 'Justice League' Cast

The Flash tells MTV News what he thinks about ‘Suicide Squad’'s abysmal critical reception

With reporting by Josh Horowitz

It’s no secret that Suicide Squad took a beating from critics. In fact, it’s currently one of the most poorly reviewed movies of the year with a 26 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. While the abysmal reviews weren’t enough to nullify the anticipated DC super-villain flick’s box office potential — Suicide Squad made a record-breaking $135 million during its opening weekend — they did have an interesting effect on the cast of the DC Extended Universe’s Justice League, who are currently filming in London.

Speaking to MTV News about a social cause close to his heart, the Scarlet Speedster himself, Ezra Miller, revealed how Suicide Squad’s critical smackdown has only further motivated him and his castmates to deliver a superhero film both fans and critics will love.

“You needn’t look any further than the Suicide Squad director and cast response to the negative reviews to feel how negative critiques motivate us,” Miller said. “Ultimately, we can’t base anything on [the critical response]. As artists, we aim to please absolutely everybody with our work, but we also know that we have to keep expressing ourselves as best as we can express ourselves.”

As for the SKWAD haters, Miller had this to say: “It’s like that T.I. song, ‘Motivation.’”

Miller’s five-second cameo in Suicide Squad, in which The Flash captures Captain Boomerang, was certainly a highlight for fans of the larger DC universe. Though initially reported that Justice League director Zack Snyder had filmed the scene with Miller in London, the actor clarified that it was a much more collaborative process.

“Saying that Zack [Snyder] shot it would not be accurate,” he said. “It was very much a collaborate effort that was supervised by DC. It was collaborative with David [Ayer].”

Regardless of who shot that crucial Suicide Squad scene, it at least confirmed one very important thing: When we meet (friendless) Barry Allen in Justice League, he’ll be fully suited up and fighting crime as a solo speedster in Central City.
