Green Day Are Coming Back With A ‘Bang Bang,’ And Fans Are Going Crazy

#PunkIsNotDead, indeed

Welcome back to paradise, Green Day fans! After a four-year drought (save for a one-off holiday song last year), the pop-punk titans have announced their return.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong took to Instagram to reveal that Green Day’s new single will drop next week. “Dear friends! green day is putting out a new single called ‘BANG BANG’ August 11. stay tuned for more details,” he wrote, accompanied by a black-and-white photo of the group looking typically cool and disaffected. He also capped the post with the cryptic hashtag #mynewband.

Last year on Christmas Eve, Green Day dropped a surprise holiday single called “Xmas Time of the Year," which marked their first official release since 2012’s Uno!, Dos!, Tre! album trilogy. Despite the multiyear break, though, they’ve kept relatively busy. Last year, the group was inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame, 25 years after the release of their first album, 39/Smooth. They also debuted a documentary, Heart Like a Hand Grenade, about the making of 2004’s American Idiot.

Suffice to say, Green Day’s devoted fan base had a field day when news of their comeback started pouring in.

There were your typical stoked reactions.

Fans were thrilled to find out that punk is not, in fact, dead.

Some fans are worried about dressing accordingly.

They’re imagining all the amazing possibilities to come.

Others are still skeptical, and will only believe Green Day’s back when they hear it.

They’re also imploring Armstrong and Co. not to fool them like My Chemical Romance recently did.

All in all, though, it’s a big time for pop-punk comebacks.

And it’s perfect timing with the election coming up.

And it doesn’t even matter what the new song sounds like — any new Green Day will be good enough.
