Michael B. Jordan Is On A ‘Smile Strike’ For Marvel’s Black Panther

MBJ tells MTV News why ‘the dimples are gone’ in ‘Black Panther’

The cast of Black Panther made their debut at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday night. Joined by director Ryan Coogler, stars Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Michael B. Jordan took to the stage to officially confirm their involvement in the film and reveal important character details. Early reports suggested that Jordan would play an infamous Marvel Comics villain, but now we finally know the bad guy’s identity: Erik Killmonger.

For Jordan, who starred in last year’s critically acclaimed Creed (and the much-maligned Fantastic Four reboot), the idea of playing an iconic supervillain was both exciting and nerve-wracking.

“My only hesitation was thinking about playing a villain,” Jordan told MTV News’s Josh Horowitz after the Marvel panel. He even joked: “I'm not smiling no more. I'm going on a smile strike. The dimples are gone — no teeth, no dimples until January.”

Noooo.

“It was always something I wanted to do, to play something completely different than any other character I’ve played before,” he added. “Under the right circumstances, this being it, I feel safe to take those risks, to take those chances — and that’s what I’m about to do.”

Black Panther is slated for release on July 6, 2018.
