Tegan And Sara Take Down Marriage Norms In New ‘BWU’ Video

You’ve never seen marriage proposals like these before

There’s possibly nothing more uncomfortable than watching a failed marriage proposal, but in their new video for “BWU,” Tegan and Sara make rejection look downright adorable.

The indie duo’s Sara Quin becomes a serial proposer in the clip, which finds her popping the question to strangers around Los Angeles ... with an empty ring box. “I don’t need a ring to prove that you’re worthy ... we don’t need a white wedding,” they sing on the synth-pop track (take that, Billy Idol!). Don’t worry, though — Sara eventually finds someone willing to take the plunge with her.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Sara explained that the song and video convey her own beliefs about love and marriage.

“I was happy when the Supreme Court ruling legalized same sex marriage in the U.S.A.,” she said. “But I was also relieved that I could finally ‘come out’ as a person who actively dislikes the institution — specifically the assumption that by not participating in the ritual you are a deviant or unlikely to share the same common values as someone who does.”

According to EW, the sisters are aiming to release a video for each song from their recently released eighth album, Love You to Death. Four down, six to go!
