Ariana Grande Is ‘Now A Checkerboard Chick’ In Hairspray Live!

Welcome to the ’60s, Ariana

Ariana Grande is about to start wearing her ponytail a whole lot higher.

The singer announced on Twitter today that she’ll be joining the cast of Hairspray Live!, the upcoming televised adaptation of the Broadway hit. Grande has signed on to play Penny, the best friend of main character Tracy Turnblad.

In the 2007 film adaptation of the musical, Penny was played by Amanda Bynes. The role will mark Grande’s first appearance on TV since she showed up on Scream Queens last year.

"Penny has been a dream role since Hairspray opened on Broadway,” Grande shared on Twitter. Kerry Butler, the actress who played Penny in the show’s original run, tweeted her approval of the casting: "You are PERFECT for Penny!!"

Hairspray Live! won’t air on NBC until December 7, but hopefully we’ll get to catch a glimpse of Grande in her ’60s getup long before that.
