Batman Confronts The Joker In Ominous First Killing Joke Clip

The Dark Knight tries (and fails) to talk things out with the Joker

The Dark Knight and the Clown Prince of Gotham City are set for a violent showdown in Batman: The Killing Joke, but first, there's a bit of exposition to get through.

The first official clip from Sam Liu's animated feature has been released, courtesy of DC Comics All Access, and it takes one of the most iconic panels from Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's graphic novel and brings the harrowing scene to life. Watch as Batman confronts the Joker in Blackgate Penitentiary — where the Joker's been locked up for two years — in an attempt to talk things out. (Yeah ... we know that's not going to end the way Bruce had hoped.) Eventually, Batman concedes that that one of them will wind up dead when all is said and done: "Our relationship is fatal."

Check out the first clip below, and if you don't want to watch the DC All Access preamble, skip ahead to the 3:55 mark:

Hailed by some as the definitive Joker text, The Killing Joke explores the mythos behind the Clown Prince's madness. It's dark, tragic, and brutally misogynistic — and it's still wildly divisive among DC Comics fans today.

The R-rated animated film — the first in the DC Extended Universe — marks the return of legendary voice actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, as Batman and the Joker, respectively, to the Batman canon.

Batman: The Killing Joke will have its world premiere at San Diego Comic-Con later this month, and will drop on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD shortly after.
