The Spice Girls Approve Of This Feminist Music Video For ‘Wannabe’

They really, really, really want equality

Girl power is stronger than ever in a new feminist video for the Spice Girls' "Wannabe." The 1996 hit turns 20 this Friday, so artists and performers from across the globe — Canada, India, Nigeria, the U.K. — created a powerful remake that lists what girls really, really, really want: quality education, an end to child marriage, and equal wages, to name a few.

"I think this film is a wonderful idea,” Victoria Beckham, Posh Spice herself, told The Guardian. “How fabulous it is that after 20 years the legacy of the Spice Girls’ girl power is being used to encourage and empower a whole new generation?”

Project Everyone and its Global Goals initiative backed the video, directed by MJ Delaney. It's meant to garner support for the United Nations' 2016 Sustainable Development Goals, which cover everything from poverty to climate change.

"The Spice Girls were about a group of different women joining together and being stronger through that bond," Delaney explained. "These differences are what we want to celebrate in this film, while showing there are some universal things that all girls, everywhere, really, really want."

The video has already racked up 9 million views on Facebook, where Beckham shared it Tuesday morning. Clearly, people are into these feminist anthems and their important messages. May I suggest remaking The Cheetah Girls' "Girl Power" next?
