Last week, Dev Hynes — the musician, songwriter, and producer who's made songs for all your faves, from Carly Rae Jepsen to Solange — released his latest album as Blood Orange. Freetown Sound plays like a love letter to bohemian urban spaces, from Hynes's current home of New York City to his father's birthplace of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Throughout, he weaves the voices of writers and poets like Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ashlee Haze with powerful cameos from singers Empress Of and Debbie Harry. An album rich in diverse voices and styles, Freetown Sound calls to mind musical touchstones from John Coltrane's jazz to the ’80s R&B of Janet Jackson and New Edition to the minimalist compositions of Steve Reich. Below, find an MTV News playlist of all the songs that Freetown Sound made us think about, from funk to pop to jazz to avant-garde psychedelia.
