Can Becoming A 'Catfish' Really Repair A Relationship?

Jamie tried to mend his marriage to Candic -- by pretending to be Titus

When a couple hits a rough patch in their marriage, there are ways to attempt salvaging the union. But for Jamie, his method of trying to get to the root of his issues with his wife Candic was to see if she would flirtatiously speak with another man. But is becoming a full-blown catfish the best way to repair a relationship?

During tonight's episode, Candic -- a 27-year-old mother to a four-year-old daughter with her partner -- contacted Nev and Max because she felt like she was betraying her spouse by having a connection with Titus (whom she met through a retail app she uses for work). She explained to the sleuths that she was going through a difficult time in her life -- specifically, dealing with the lingering effects of losing her mother at a young age -- and the mysterious person was able to support her when her husband couldn't.

"Jamie is a good person -- it's the communication that we have issues with. He's just hard to talk to," she explained, adding that Jamie has been deployed overseas and, as a result, he's shut down about anything emotional.

However, Candic was ready to get some honest answers about Titus -- and understand why she never met him even though he only lived one town over (they'd also never spoken on the phone). As expected, Titus was someone closely associated with Candic -- and when Nev came face-to-face with Jamie (he requested to meet the MTV host before coming clean to his wife), he gave the situation a lot of context.

"I could tell there was something going on the past few months -- even right before I started as Titus," Jamie calmly explained. "I thought that maybe it was me that she didn't want anymore. For me, not being able to pinpoint her problem really got to me. Stupidly, I created Titus to see if she would talk to someone else and if it was me that she didn't want anymore."

From there, he elaborated that he asked her to send provocative photos and she declined because she stated she was married. Jamie insisted he tried to leave it at that, but she kept messaging him and opening up to him about painful topics.

"She's not looking for someone else -- she's looking for more of you," Nev stressed. "It's kind of fucked up what you did."

Understandably, Candic was speechless and confused as to why Jamie would think she would cheat on him. He sincerely apologized for betraying the love of his life and stressed that the only reason he kept the Titus alias going was because she told Titus everything that was wrong. In an interesting way, he gained an understanding of her needs, and the two seemed closer than ever before when it was time to close the chapter on this installment.

"A little Catfish can help a relationship," Max stated as he and Nev left the couple.

But can it? On one hand, the pair looked happier than ever and visibly relieved that they didn't have to live with keeping secrets any longer. But on the other, Jamie did deceive Candic when he could have been honest about their strained bond. Share your thoughts in the comments, and be sure to keep watching Catfish on Wednesdays at 10/9c.
