Chance the Rapper doesn’t play to the rules. He changes them.

After a petition called for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to consider free albums and mixtapes in their nominations, the Grammy awards are now officially open to streaming-only releases.

In a press release, the Academy announced that new updates to the nomination process "allow previously ineligible streaming-only works to be considered.” Those updates are effective immediately, meaning that recent streaming-only releases are eligible for the 59th Grammy Awards.

That’s amazing news for Chance, whose new tape Coloring Book saw a streaming-only release last month. "I hear you gotta sell it to snatch the Grammy," Chance rapped earlier this year on Kanye West's "Ultralight Beam." "Let's make it so free."

"Throughout the year, members of the music community come to us asking to make changes to the Awards process, and we work with them to figure out how those changes might work,” said Bill Freimuth, Senior Vice-President of Awards for The Recording Academy. "I'm proud of this year's changes because they're a testament to the artists, producers, and writers — the people who rolled up their sleeves to shape the proposals and, in turn, the future of the Grammys. It's exactly what they should be doing. It's their award."

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on February 12, 2017. That might just be the day Chance gets to take home his long-deserved gramophone.
